After a Failed Newborn Hearing Test

Important: A failed newborn hearing screen is not a definitive diagnosis — many babies pass their follow-up test. However, it is smart to start learning about ASL now, regardless of the outcome. Beginning early opens a door of communication with your child no matter what the follow-up results show.

ASL for Babies & Toddlers

You can start teaching your baby ASL even while you're still learning it yourself — babies can begin learning ASL as a first language. Helpful apps for early communication:

Next Steps After a Failed Screening

3 mo

All babies who don't pass the initial screening should have a complete hearing test before 3 months of age.

6 mo

All babies confirmed with hearing loss should begin intervention services before 6 months of age.

  • Your state's Early Intervention program — free for every family; ask your pediatrician for a referral. You can request ASL instruction through this program.
